There is something so relaxing about taking pictures for yourself. There is no client, no deadlines, no worries about backing up digital files. Just a few rolls of film and a camera tossed in your bag for a day out and about in a fun and exciting city. It’s what dreams are made of.

the eiffel tower is lovely, yes, but I like the carousel. almost entirely unlauded, everyone takes pictures by the tower. waits a long time to go up to the top of the tower, while the carousel spins happily and plinks a tune, 90% empty. me? gimme some fries and mayonnaise (okay, and a butter and sugar crepe) and let me watch my enameled horses go ’round and ’round.

“When I was starting out, I kept thinking I was supposed to go to New Guinea or some far-off place to make pictures that count, but then I decided I was going to walk out the door and play like I’d come from Mars or China and had never seen this landscape.
